EMT Training
The 200 hour Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program is the initial pre-hospital certification in South Carolina. This program prepares the candidate to provide basic emergency medical care to victims of trauma and illness. This course follows and exceeds the 2009 US Department of Transportation (DOT) / National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT National Standard Curriculum. The course includes:
- DOT/NHTSA EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum
- Advanced Airway Module
- CPR Course (AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers)
- SC Enrichment Modules
- Infection Control
- Hazardous Materials
- Weapons of Mass Destruction
- National Incident Command System
Entrance Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Eighteen (18) years of age prior to the NR practical exam
- Be physically fit and able to perform all the tasks required of an EMT
- Must satisfy pre-screening requirements in reading comprehension and math. The College of Charleston currently utilizes the TEAS (Test of Essential Acadmic Skills).
- Candidates possessing an advanced degree from an accredited institution of highter learning may exempt the pre-screening requirements at the discretion of the EMT Program Coordinator.
Reciprocity from Other States
If you are currently certified as an emergency medical technician in another state and wish to obtain reciprocity in South Carolina, you will need to submit a reciprocity application as per S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control regulations.
